FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: Is this a replacement for therapy?
A: No. Kol Shimon groups are peer-based parent support groups, guided by therapists. They are not a substitute for individual or family therapy.
Q: Do the teens attend the sessions?
A: No. These groups are for parents only. However, we may create teen peer spaces in the future.
Q: What kinds of parents join Kol Shimon?
A: Parents whose teens are emotionally struggling—but cognitively able. Our focus is on supporting parents of children who may be bright, capable, or even gifted, yet feel emotionally lost, withdrawn, anxious, or hopeless.
Q: How are groups matched?
A: Through a confidential intake process. We consider the primary struggles of the child, age, family situation, and preferences to ensure each group is cohesive and supportive.
Q: What are the therapists’ roles in these groups?
A: Two therapists (from different modalities) co-lead each session alongside a consistent facilitator. They introduce tools, help guide discussions, and offer healing insight—without taking over the space.
Q: What if I don’t like my group?
A: We strive to place you in the best possible match. If after a few sessions you feel out of sync, we’ll work with you to find a more suitable group.
Q: Is this program religious?
A: Kol Shimon is rooted in Jewish values and language, but is not affiliated with any specific hashkafah or denomination. All backgrounds welcome.
Q: What does it cost?
A: We offer group support at a minimal cost or sliding scale where possible. Our therapists receive modest stipends, and fundraising covers additional needs.
